Longest Open House History & Impact
What began as one Fargo–Moorhead REALTOR® honoring his father has grown into a multi-city movement supporting the Alzheimer’s Association—one extraordinarily long open house at a time.
Kyle Olson created the Longest Open House after losing his father, Dewey Olson, to Alzheimer’s in 2019. During the disease, some days seemed to restart every few minutes, while Kyle’s mother carried the exhausting work of caregiving. The event turns that experience into action: keeping a home open for an extraordinary length of time to represent the long days faced by families living with dementia.
The first event combined a real estate open house with food, activities, sponsors and community fundraising. It quickly became more than a single weekend—it became a repeatable way for REALTORS® and communities to raise awareness and funds together.
How the movement grew
2021
The first record
A 62-hour Fargo event raised just over $7,000, supported by 12 sponsors and a community willing to show up at every hour.
2022
Longer and stronger
The event grew to 63 hours and raised $15,606, with 26 sponsors and 48 donors supporting the Alzheimer’s Association.
2023
Two-city expansion
The third annual event reached 64 hours and expanded beyond Fargo, demonstrating that the concept could travel to other communities.
2024
A national network
Nine events in eight states brought together 13 REALTORS®, more than 149 cumulative open-house hours and $24,172 raised during the national weekend.
2025
A 66-hour Fargo flagship
The Fargo event extended to 66 continuous hours and raised more than $25,000, while additional cities continued building the national effort.
Today
From event to movement
The Longest Open House continues helping REALTORS® organize local events, share resources and turn real estate visibility into support for families affected by Alzheimer’s.
The hours change. The purpose does not.
